Joyce Kilmer

Alfred Joyce Kilmer was an American poet who is most famous for his poem "Trees". The Joyce Kilmer Memorial Forest is an old-growth forest dedicated to his memory, and many schools, streets and parks in America are named after him.
TREES
by Joyce Kilmer
I think that I shall never see
A poem lovely as a tree.
A tree whose hungry mouth is prest
Against the sweet earth's flowing breast;
A tree that looks at God all day,
And lifts her leafy arms to pray;
A tree that may in summer wear
A nest of robins in her hair;
Upon whose bosom snow has lain;
Who intimately lives with rain.
Poems are made by fools like me,
But only God can make a tree.
Since this is one of my least favourite of his poems, here is one of the ones I do like. I'm going to post another Queen Elizabeth I poem soon, so this is a good precursor:
QUEEN ELIZABETH SPEAKS
by Joyce Kilmer
My hands were stained with blood, my heart was proud and cold,
My soul is black with shame... but I gave Shakespeare gold.
So after aeons of flame, I may, by grace of God,
Rise up to kiss the dust that Shakespeare's feet have trod.
