Famous Poets Quiz

February 22nd 2008 02:52
Name that Poet?

After enjoying posting a “Name the artist” quiz over on worldart.com.au I thought it would be fun to do one on famous poets.

Nearly everyone is familiar with at least one of their works but for many in the general populace the physical identity of the author is a mystery. Maybe due to the fact many died generations ago and in the modern era the art of word craft has been remove in favour of stating the obvious.

The mainstream seems uninterested in looking for the deeper meaning in creative expression. Ambiguity, paradigm and metaphoric symbolism all have no place in the sensationalistic world of journalism and news media. Nor does it fit with the catch phrase dominance in pop music, movies and other popular entertainment.

The need to empathise and understand others emotional plight has been replaced with the Jerry Springer, Reality TV mentality. It seems the less effort required for comprehension the more popular.

Where did that come from? I didn’t mean this to turn into a rant. The opposite, this is about having fun on a Friday. So without further distraction, if you look down below you will find a series of photos portraits of famous poets with the name of one of their works as a clue

As I said on the other site, I’m not looking to bust any noggins here just provide a couple of minutes entertainment to those who answer the siren call of trivia. Keeping it simple, this is a “Name the Famous Poet” game where you submit the answers in the comments section below.

All the poems are by famous wordsmiths though in some cases it may not be there most recognized work selected. Instead the criteria for the poet I chose comes under the heading “Subjective favourites”, all of which have already featured on this site.

These are people who revolutionised the literary universe and gave us some of the most inspirational and important word combinations in history. I hope you enjoy it and Good Luck. (No cheating by running your cursor over the image)
